PS5 Slim: Latest PlayStation Edition is Thinner and Still Powerful

Sony has introduced a slimmer iteration of its PlayStation 5 (PS5), providing gamers a more compact alternative to the original model. Despite its reduced size, the new PS5 Slim retains most of the features of its predecessor, bringing both improvements and considerations for potential buyers.

The most noticeable change lies in the dimensions of the latest PlayStation console. Although considerably smaller than the original PS5, the overall design of the PS5 Slim remains familiar. A comparison by Gizmodo with the special edition Spider-Man 2 PS5 revealed that the new PS5 Slim is notably shorter.

PS5 Slim vs. Original PS5: Which Console is Better?

The reduction primarily reflects changes in height and depth, resulting in a more manageable size for users. The original PS5 measured 15.4 by 4.1 by 10.2 inches, whereas the new PS5 Slim comes in at 14.1 by 3.8 by 8.5 inches, making it more than an inch shorter and more compact. However, due to the extended optical disc drive shelf, the PS5 Slim's width remains nearly the same as the original PS5.

One significant modification is observed in the ports on the shell of the latest PlayStation console. The PS5 Slim features two USB-C ports on the front plate, while the back plate maintains the familiar LAN, HDMI, and USB ports, albeit rearranged. Additionally, the faceplates are now removable, offering users a customizable touch to their PS5 Slim console.

Despite these changes, both the original and Slim versions of the PS5 share identical internal specifications. Users can expect a consistent gaming experience across the spectrum of PS5 consoles, eliminating concerns about varying performance levels.

An internal bonus for owners of the new PS5 Slim models is the expanded storage capacity. The latest PS5 variants include 1TB of internal storage, giving players more room for game installs than the original 825GB.

Sony sells two types of PS5 Slim: one with a disc drive and one digital-only. Notably, the disc drive is detachable, providing PlayStation users with flexibility. The new PS console is available through PlayStation Direct, the company's official website, with a gradual rollout to physical shops in the future, according to Marca.
