In a recent update, Android Auto added a subtle but noticeable feature that makes the in-car infotainment experience more personalized for Samsung Galaxy phone users.

9to5Google reports that the most recent version, Android Auto 11.0, includes a one-of-a-kind adaptation that syncs app icons and icon shapes with those found on Samsung devices, specifically the 'squircle' shape seen in Samsung's One UI skin.

Visual Harmony with Samsung's One UI

Users with Samsung Galaxy phones will now observe a seamless transition of their app icons in Android Auto's app drawer and task switcher from the default circular shapes to the distinctive "squircle" employed in Samsung's One UI.

This change extends beyond aesthetics, encompassing popular icons like phone settings, signal strength, and battery indicators. The synchronized icons contribute to a cohesive visual experience, aligning Android Auto more closely with the overall look and feel of Samsung's devices.

Status Icons and Compatibility with Other OEMs

Not stopping at app icons, Android Auto 11.0 extends the visual synchronization to status icons. When a Samsung Galaxy device is connected, Android Auto mirrors the cellular/Wi-Fi icons and battery indicators from Samsung devices, offering a harmonious interface.

Interestingly, this compatibility is not exclusive to Samsung; Android Authority tells us that Android Auto adapts to different icon shapes when connected to devices from other Android OEMs. For instance, a connection to an Oppo device results in the projection of square icon shapes from ColorOS onto Android Auto.

Version Compatibility

The implementation of this feature traces back to earlier versions, with indications of its presence dating back to Android Auto 10.7. However, widespread availability seems to be tied to version 11.0.

It is worth noting that the changes may be server-side, so users are encouraged to check the Play Store for updates if the feature isn't immediately visible.

More From Android Auto

While this update may seem like a small touch of personalization, it adds to the suite of recent improvements in Android Auto. Google's popular mapping app for the platform, Google Maps, has also seen updates, allowing users to save their parking locations.

Collectively, these incremental enhancements contribute to a more refined and user-friendly experience within the Android Auto ecosystem.

What's Next?

While Android Auto now caters to Samsung Galaxy devices, there is a shared sentiment among users and enthusiasts for the platform to extend this adaptation to include app icons from other OEMs.

This desire for increased personalization hints at a potential avenue for future updates, making Android Auto even more tailored to individual user preferences.

Android Auto's latest update introduces a visually harmonious experience for Samsung Galaxy users, reflecting a commitment to enhancing user interaction within the platform.
