A new disinformation campaign launched by unknown individuals or groups used President Joe Biden's voice via a robocall campaign to tell New Hampshire voters to "save" their votes this Tuesday. In this new campaign, the New Hampshire Attorney General's office claimed that this recorded message was fake, generated to urge people to give up their right of suffrage.

Currently, this Biden robocall campaign is under investigation by the Attorney General's office, as it disrupted the election process in the state.

Reports now claim that there has been a widespread campaign that took advantage of robocalls to deliver a message, and it used POTUS Joe Biden's voice, deepfaked to tell recipients to "save" their votes in New Hampshire. This is amidst the upcoming New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election, also inciting a message that claims voting this Tuesday "only enables Republicans."

The deepfaked robocall used President Biden's voice to advise people not to vote today and "save" it for November, the schedule of the US general election.

It remains unknown how many people in New Hampshire received the robocall.

Attorney General Says it's Fake, Investigates the Incident

New Hampshire's Office of the Attorney General also disputed the robocall campaign, calling it a voter suppression campaign, also claiming that this is fake.

"Although the voice in the robocall sounds like the voice of President Biden, this message appears to be artificially generated based on initial indications," said in its news release.

Moreover, it said that the robocall's caller ID was also spoofed by the people responsible for it to show that it came from the "treasurer of a political committee that has been supporting the New Hampshire Democratic Presidential Primary write-in efforts for President Biden."

The Attorney General's office claimed that the Election Law Unit is investigating this robocall campaign to spread the deepfaked message and misinformation.

Robocalls, Deepfake, and AI in the 2024 Elections

There were massive concerns raised by officials, experts, and politicians that may be significantly widespread online in the coming 2024 US Presidential elections, especially with the abundance of tools and services that help make it.

The availability and accessibility of many generative AI tools are now the focus amidst the era of misinformation to create deepfake campaigns that may compromise election integrity.

Last year, the Federal Election Commission looked into evaluating the regulations to impose regarding AI-powered political campaigns amidst this time of developments and improvements in generative AI. Recently, the use of any generative AI content or creations using the tech for political campaigns was banned, particularly with the use of ChatGPT.

Massive robocalling campaigns were also foiled by the likes of the FCC, but the initial campaigns by unknown groups behind them did not center on spreading fake news on elections. This recent incident that used President Biden's voice for the misinformation campaign may have disrupted the New Hampshire Presidential Primary Election, but let it be clear that it is fake and investigations are now underway to find out who was behind it.
