A new gameplay trailer drop from Funcom and Nukklear sheds more light on their development of the open-world MMO, Dune: Awakening. This centers on "Surviving Arrakis," showing off how they built the desert planet of the renowned film and novel franchise.

Funcom touts the game to be an open-world survival MMO, showcasing more of the adventures and what to expect from the title. Apart from playing as the game's hero and learning special abilities from the Bene Gesserit and Mentats, gamers also get to fly the famed Ornithopter from the books and movies.

It is also hinted that users may get to choose sides, with their clothing being a significant factor of their likeness, packed into a multiplayer experience set in Arrakis.

What to Expect from New MMO, Dune: Awakening

The new gameplay trailer shows more of what to expect from the upcoming game, with snippets showing characters from the books and movies, offering a unique story across the world of Dune. The franchise's beasts will also make an appearance here including the iconic sandworm.

Dune: Awakening takes the form of a sandbox game, best known for being featured by the likes of Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto, Minecraft, and more.

The game can now be added to Steam's wishlist but is not yet available for preorders. Funcom and Nukklear have yet to reveal the exact release date for the game.

Dune and its Renowned Franchise

Decades passed since the books from Frank Herbert brought everyone to the world of Arrakis, the famed desert planet where its sands are coveted by prominent families on the brink of war. After a massive focus during the late 20th century, it was later rebooted in modern times, with Denis Villeneuve promising a faithful adaptation of the novels to the big screen.

The 2021 reboot of the franchise with Timothée Chalamet starring as the young hero, Paul Atreides, alongside renowned Hollywood artists like Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac, and more-was considered a massive success.

However, this did not yet spark video game remakes for the past releases during the 1990s.

The good thing is, that Funcom, in collaboration with Nukklear, stepped up to bring its take on a Dune game, one that took inspiration from the former's previous game known as Conan Exiles.

In 2022, Funcom and Nukklear first dropped the trailer and confirmed its work on a Dune MMO, offering an open world that presents Arrakis and its treacherous environment for all. Two years later, Dune: Awakening gets a massive update in the form of a gameplay trailer, signaling a nearing release date, but remains unconfirmed by the developers.
