We know how Xiaomi changed the tech industry in its smartphone-making business, but this Chinese firm continues to explore beyond its usual expertise of products.

With its official entry into the electric car market thanks to the launch of SU7, Tesla has finally found its counterpart on the other side of the world. The new Xiaomi SU7 is said to be $4,000 cheaper than Tesla's Model 3.

The SU7 is currently available in China for 215,900 yuan or $30,408 whereas the Model 3 costs 245,900 yuan.

With Xiaomi officially entering the EV race, it's now testing the water to see if the newly-released SU7 which is cheaper, will fare better than Tesla's Model 3.

According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, the SU7 offers superior specifications compared to the Model 3 in over 90% of aspects. While the pricing strategy may result in losses per unit, the company aims to attract customers with advanced features and competitive pricing.

Deliveries are slated to commence by the end of April, with the SU7 boasting a fully automated production process capable of producing a car every 76 seconds.

Xiaomi's SU7 is Facing Hot Battle in EV Space

With its official arrival in the EV landscape, the SU7 enters a fiercely competitive market in China, with established players like Tesla, Nio, and Xpeng dominating the segment, according to CNBC.

To differentiate itself, Xiaomi plans to leverage its extensive ecosystem of connected devices and its new HyperOS operating system, offering seamless integration with smartphones and smart home appliances.

Targeting Premium Segments

While Xiaomi's reputation lies in offering affordable products, the SU7 marks its first attempt into the premium electric car segment. With a targeted launch price of 299,900 yuan for the "Max" version, Xiaomi also aims to compete with luxury brands like Porsche's Taycan in the future.

Comprehensive Accessory Package

To enhance the driving experience, Xiaomi unveiled a range of accessories for the SU7, including an in-car refrigerator, custom window shades, and smartphone holders. Some accessories will be offered free of charge with car purchases, adding value for customers.

Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems

Equipped with two ADAS options, the Xiaomi SU7 offers cutting-edge safety features:

  • Xiaomi Pilot Pro: Utilizing pure vision technology, similar to Tesla, and powered by the Nvidia Drive Orin chip.
  • Xiaomi Pilot Max: Integrating pure vision and lidar technology, providing enhanced safety and control on the road.

Smart Connectivity Features

The SU7 supports Apple CarPlay and iPad connectivity, enhancing the driving experience by seamlessly integrating with Apple devices.

Xiaomi Eyes Global Expansion Plan For EV

Initially available in China, Xiaomi intends to expand its electric car offerings overseas within the next two to three years. The company showcased the SU7 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, signaling its ambition for international growth.

Xiaomi's entry into the electric car market with the SU7 is a sign that there are no limitations when it comes to business. If you are a phonemaker, it does not mean that you will stay there forever.

The Chinese company's move to diversify its product portfolio is in line with its plans to venture into the EV industry. If it follows the same route that BYD took, it might have a chance to compete with foreign automakers in the future
