Microsoft Corporation has announced plans to invest $2.9 billion over the next two years in Japan's artificial intelligence (AI) sector. 

The investment is Microsoft's largest in Japan, demonstrating the company's strategic focus on growing AI technology in the country. Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined plans for this massive investment during an exclusive interview with Nikkei.

Microsoft Invests Big on Japan AI Infrastructure

According to Smith, the investment will primarily target the expansion of data centers in Japan, with a particular emphasis on enhancing computing power for AI applications. 

This initiative aligns with Tokyo's efforts to strengthen domestic AI infrastructure amid increasing global competition. Smith emphasized the critical role of AI in driving productivity growth, particularly in economies facing workforce decline like Japan.

As part of the investment plan, Microsoft intends to install state-of-the-art AI semiconductors at two existing facilities located in eastern and western Japan. This move aims to equip Japan with cutting-edge AI technology to drive innovation across various sectors of the economy. 

Furthermore, Microsoft plans to unveil an ambitious AI-related reskilling program designed to train three million workers over the next three years. This initiative underscores Microsoft's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering digital skills development in Japan.

New Microsoft Research and Development Lab in Tokyo

In addition to infrastructure upgrades and workforce development, Microsoft is set to establish a new research and development lab in Tokyo dedicated to robotics and AI. 

This lab will serve as a hub for collaborative research efforts aimed at pushing the boundaries of AI innovation. Microsoft Research Asia, a key player in the global AI research community, will provide substantial funding of 1.5 billion yen ($9.9 million) for research projects in collaboration with leading academic institutions in Japan.

Brad Smith highlighted the importance of collaboration between industry and government in addressing emerging cybersecurity challenges.
