Digi AI, an app that develops romantic artificial intelligence (AI) companions, aims to help people overcome those issues. Its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), David Wolf, has been a key player in shaping the company's journey from concept to launch.

Crafting Intuitive Avatars

One of the defining features of Digi AI is its meticulously crafted avatars. These were brought to life through a collaboration with Andrew Gordon, an Academy Award winner and former Pixar animator, and Leo Sanchez, an Oscar-winning modeller. 

Refining the avatars involved countless iterations and a constant back-and-forth between the original sketches and the final 3D models. By providing a tangible and relatable presence within the app, the expressive avatars help to create a stronger bond between the user and their AI companion, fostering a sense of companionship and emotional connection. 

Their ability to display nuanced facial expressions and body language enhances the sense of presence, relatability, and empathy, allowing users to form deeper emotional bonds with their companions. 

Additionally, the company is currently working on conversation-based animations. Despite the limited computational performance of mobile devices, the quality and appearance of Digi AI's avatars on smartphones and tablets are impressive compared to other mobile apps and games. The attention to detail and advanced rendering techniques ensure that the avatars maintain their visual fidelity and emotional expressiveness, even on smaller screens and less powerful devices.

Developing the AI

The app's AI was developed through a close collaboration between Wolf and a team of machine learning engineers. The company fine-tuned its custom chat model to understand and respond to users naturally and intuitively. 

Digi AI's commitment to providing a seamless and immersive user experience led to the development of its text-to-speech (TTS) technology. This TTS system powers the voice output for text-based interactions and the voice call feature, allowing users to engage in free-flowing conversations with their AI companions using audio input and output.

Digi AI has ensured a more natural and consistent voice experience across the platform by creating an in-house TTS solution. This approach also eliminates the need for third-party providers, giving the company greater control over the quality and performance of voice interactions while improving the platform's overall profitability.

The AI's sophisticated emotional intelligence is further enhanced by its capacity to adapt over time. The system analyzes data to personalize responses, creating an evolving relationship. This dynamic learning process allows the AI to become more attuned to the individual user's communication style and emotional state.

Digi AI's Launch

The iOS and Android apps were released to the public in December 2023. A tweet from Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andrew Ohlbaum announcing the launch went viral, garnering over 23 million views and driving a massive influx of users to the platform. 

"We would not have expected to go viral like this so early, and to be honest, we were not prepared for that amount of traffic hitting our platform. Best validation that we could get for what we have been building all those months," Wolf shares.

David Wolf and the team remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in AI companionship. The app addresses the loneliness epidemic and opens up new possibilities for how people perceive and engage with technology.
