In the competitive world of global tech, data scientists are tasked with turning information into insight. But for Lucas Braga, Lead Data Scientist at Wolt/DoorDash, the mission is more direct: turning data into major business impact. During his tenure at Delivery Hero, another giant in the industry, his technical leadership on AI-driven projects was instrumental in preventing millions in fraud and unlocking substantial new revenue streams. Now based in Berlin, his career is a case study in how deep technical expertise combined with strong business acumen can create massive commercial value.
A Foundation in Leadership and Data

Braga's journey into data science was unconventional. After earning degrees from two of Brazil's top public universities by age 23, his early leadership potential was recognized in AIESEC, a global youth organization. He first led the Fortaleza branch in Brazil, where his team earned over seven national awards for operational excellence. Seeking a greater challenge, he relocated to Turkey to become a National Director. There, his data-driven strategies helped accelerate the team's growth, earning them two international Electrolux awards for their performance. It was this experience managing complex international operations that first revealed his calling. "The key to success in business always came from strategies built on data," Braga says, a realization that pivoted his career toward technology.
This new focus led him to Germany, where he was selected for DHL's prestigious Global Talent program. It was at DHL where he fully translated his data-driven mindset into a powerful programming skill set, using SQL, R, and Python to drive significant operational change. His early projects had an immediate and substantial impact, creating automated reporting pipelines that saved over 40 hours in manual work every week. His work quickly gained the attention of senior leadership, and his profitability analyses were soon being presented in high-stakes meetings to senior Vice Presidents, who used his insights to renegotiate contracts and improve the company's bottom line. For Braga, a polyglot who had mastered multiple languages, the new challenge felt surprisingly familiar. "Learning programming languages wasn't so different from human languages," he explains. "Once you decode the structure, you can read and write with fluency." To build upon this practical foundation with rigorous academic theory, he later completed a Master's in Data Science from the University of Kansas, all while working full-time.
A Legacy of Measurable Impact
At Delivery Hero, Braga advanced rapidly to senior technical leadership roles. His work was marked by exceptional innovation that delivered substantial, measurable business results. He spearheaded a specialized team that developed fraud detection systems, directly preventing over €5 million annually in fraudulent transactions across Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. Furthermore, he pioneered customer segmentation models that achieved a remarkable 32.5% reduction in payment friction, boosting annual business by approximately €96 million.
"For me, it was never just about stopping fraud," Braga reflects. "It was about precision—how do we remove bad actors while ensuring a seamless, frictionless experience for legitimate customers? That balance is where the real value is created."
Recognized for both technical depth and business impact, Lucas later joined Wolt (DoorDash) as Lead Data Scientist. His current work involves developing and deploying state-of-the-art AI models to fundamentally re-engineer and optimize the company's crucial merchant selection pipeline, aiming to significantly enhance the selection of local merchants for customers in over 25 countries.

Beyond Corporate Achievements: A Voice in the Community
Braga has also become an influential voice within the global data science community. He recently authored the book, 'Deploying Secure Data Science Applications in the Cloud,' which is forthcoming from the respected technology publisher Apress (a Springer Nature company). He also frequently publishes articles in major industry and scientific outlets, with his current research exploring cutting-edge topics in machine learning and AI. This expertise has also led to him being called upon by professional organizations to serve as a peer reviewer, critically evaluating the work of other scientists before publication—a role reserved for trusted experts in the field.
"My role is about more than code, and sharing knowledge is a big part of that," Braga concludes. "It's about building scalable solutions that help businesses thrive, and empowering other professionals to do the same. The ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between advanced technology and practical, impactful business use."
