"Star Wars" fans have a lot to be excited for as a new game has been announced during The Game Awards 2025.
Its name, "Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic" sent fans into a frenzy as many wondered if this is a direct sequel to the much-loved "Knights of the Old Republic," which came out in 2003.
Unfortunately, the answer to that is no.
'Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic' Is Not a Direct Sequel
The "Star Wars" official website confirmed that "Fate of the Old Republic" is not a direct sequel or continuation of "Knights of the Old Republic" in a post discussing the upcoming game.
Instead, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games Douglas Reilly describes it as "being built by people who helped shape that legacy."
"Fate of the Old Republic" is in the early stages of the development, but the website post has revealed that the player will take on the role of a Force user, and the game will take place in "a galaxy on the edge of rebirth at the end of the Old Republic."
It has also been confirmed by both the website post and during The Game Awards that the game will be headed by Casey Hudson, the director of "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and the "Mass Effect" trilogy.
When is the Release Date?
As exciting as this news may be, fans will have to temper their excitement as the game does not have a release date as of writing.
To reiterate, it is still in the early stages of development, which may mean that there is a potentially long wait for the game.
While waiting, fans can enjoy the trailer showed during The Game Awards 2025, which you can watch below.
