Global trading platform Capital.com is a big believer in the idea that "less is more," if its new app redesign is any indicator. The fintech company has just unveiled a massive redesign of its core mobile application and trading platform, implementing a cleaner, more minimalist style to go with its refreshed brand identity.

The revamped app has launched globally on Android and iOS, providing a stark contrast to the one it replaces. Whereas most trading apps share similar, extremely cluttered and "high-energy" interfaces, Capital.com has opted to ease the cognitive load on users. It's pivoting to a streamlined user interface that tries to make life easier by helping users act more decisively when taking financial actions.

Capital.com said it decided to rebuild its app based on client feedback, which indicated a desire for less "noise" and more clarity. As Chief Product Sasha Gubochkin explained, it wanted to build an app that would help users make "better decisions," with an interface that supports more considered engagement rather than pressing them to take action quickly. That's why it focused its redesign specifically on helping users to understand their situation before deciding how to act, and any elements that didn't do that were quietly dropped.

"Well-designed interfaces reduce the cognitive load on clients under pressure," Gubochkin said. "The updated platform is structured to present information clearly, support deliberate engagement, and reduce unnecessary urgency."

The most obvious change for existing users is the refined visual aesthetics, which are focused on three core colors — Midnight, Light, and Gold. At the same time, the company also stripped out many of the more aggressive elements of the original app, while implementing new typography that's structured for readability. These design choices were made to ensure users can focus on the most important data, such as the financial assets and market prices.

With that in mind, the redesign also introduced a new framing device called "The Lens," which is based on the "dot" in Capital.com, to try and remind users of the platform's guiding purpose of bringing relevant info to focus.

Besides giving the app a fresh lick of paint, Capital.com has also introduced structural changes that streamline the user's workflow. For instance, navigation is consolidated within a personalized home surface, replacing the fragmented menus of before. It pulls together the user's current positions, assets, market conditions, and watchlists into one place to minimize the constant screen switching that plagued the original app. Users are also encouraged to take the new AI assistant for a spin. It's a contextual search tool that allows users to ask for assistance or query the latest market data in natural language and receive easy-to-understand responses.

Finally, Capital.com introduced a comprehensive real-time analytics tool that surfaces users' personal trading patterns, enabling them to review their own performance before making key decisions.

At a time when financial applications are facing criticism over their push to "gamify" trading applications, Capital.com seems to be pushing the industry in a new direction. The concept is based on a simple belief: the best user experience is one that keeps distractions to a minimum.
