Apple has released iOS 26.5.1 for iPhone, a targeted update that fixes a wired charging bug affecting iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models when the battery is almost depleted.

According to Apple's release notes, iOS 26.5.1 addresses an issue where a small number of users could not charge their iPhone Air or iPhone 17 devices via cable once the battery was nearly drained.

The problem could prevent affected phones from recovering from very low power states, effectively leaving users temporarily unable to use wired charging until power conditions changed. Apple describes the update as a bug fix rather than a feature release, and it is rolling out now to support iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models, according to 9to5 Mac.

The update arrives roughly three weeks after iOS 26.5, which introduced end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging support in Messages for compatible carriers. iOS 26.5 also added suggested places in Apple Maps and a new Pride Luminance wallpaper, along with other enhancements and bug fixes for iPhone.

With iOS 26.5.1, Apple is following its usual pattern of releasing a small follow-up update to resolve specific bugs discovered after a broader feature rollout.

For iPhone owners, the most important change is stability around charging on newer hardware rather than any visible new tools or design changes. Users who rely on wired charging for faster power top-ups or for use in cars and docks are the most likely to notice the fix if they were previously affected, Thurrott reported.

Apple has not detailed any additional changes in the public notes, and it is common for the company to keep minor internal fixes and security adjustments undocumented in brief release summaries.

iOS 26.5.1 can be installed by going to Settings, then General, then Software Update on compatible devices. The update is being released just ahead of Apple's WWDC 2026 developer conference, where the company is expected to preview the next major versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

For now, iOS 26.5.1 is a maintenance release focused on ensuring iPhone Air and iPhone 17 models charge reliably under low-battery conditions, closing out one of the more significant bugs reported since iOS 26.5 became available, as per Mac Rumors.
