During the Build 2026 event, Microsoft unveiled its upcoming and experimental projects. One, in particular, has caught the attention of many, and it's none other than "Project Solara."
Microsoft's Project Solara has a massive goal in mind, which is to replace apps, operating systems, and other platforms with AI agents and have a specific smart device run on a chip-to-cloud technology in the future.
Microsoft Unveils Project Solara: New Concept for AI Agents
Microsoft announced its new platform that could potentially replace existing infrastructure, platforms, and more using artificial intelligence as Build 2026 became the setting of the world's first look at Project Solara.
Project Solara is still a software platform, but this new development will have it tailored to hardware solutions and pioneer an agent-first experience for users.
According to Microsoft, Project Solara's AI agents are "shaped around you: agents, your tasks, your environment, under your control."
The company said that what sets this apart from existing hardware and technologies available is that the power of its agents and AI can help accelerate the "creation of even more specialized computers without incurring the full cost and tradeoffs," said Steven Bathiche, manager and leader of Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group (ASG).
It was also revealed by Bathiche that there are already two concepts designed for this new technology, and they will be shared by Microsoft soon.
Microsoft, Qualcomm Partnership on Project Solara
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon both graced the stage of Build 2026 to announce their partnership for the latest Project Solara development.
Qualcomm's role is to serve as Microsoft's key technology partner, where it will help deliver the needed chip-to-cloud platform based on a silicon processor that the chip-making company will fulfill.
The duo of Amon and Nadella did not reveal much about which products the Project Solara will be applied to, but both said that it is intended to be for devices used frequently by users.
Here, they also said that the technology is for the broad use of the term computer, in general, and not limited to the laptop or desktop.
Microsoft's Future: No More OS, Only Agents
According to 9to5Mac's report, Microsoft said that it is now making a major shift in its business under Project Solara, where it will move from developing operating systems and devices for apps to AI agents.
The example shared by the company shows a smart display and a smart key badge, and they are able to show Microsoft 365 information stored in it for users to see, with voice command also available.
In theory, this technology could execute tasks for a user, hence its agentic capabilities.
