The snow was thick, the balls were packed, and at exactly 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the first snowball was thrown. Although government offices were closed due to the five inches of snow from the first major snowfall of the season in Washington, it was no better time to commence the biggest snowball fight D.C. residents had ever experienced.

And wouldn't you know it, even Captain America joined in on the fray, using his red white and blue shield to protect himself from the onslaught of cold, white projectiles.

The massive snowball fight was organized by the D.C. Snowball Fight Association which announces its events on its Facebook page and social media.

The event was originally supposed to happen at Dupont Circle in honor of another snowball fight that took place at that venue during the snowmageddon of February 2010 where a reported 1000 people joined the snowball fight. However, those plans were scrapped when the city plowed the streets and another arena had to be spontaneously arranged.

With only hours to spare, the location was changed to Meridian Hill Park mall. Although it took a while to gain momentum, over 100 participants in the snowball fight hurled snowy white balls back and forth with no clear way to tell whose side of the hill anybody was on - not that it really mattered.

In addition to Captain America, others who got dressed up for the occasion were a man in a chicken suit, a giraffe costumes, a giant panda, some Vikings, a ninja turtle, and even Gumby among many others.

Amidst the fog of powdery white snow, people tried to take cover behind trees, fountains, other snow ballers, and some even got on their knees and held their hands up, all grins, in surrender.
"Cease fire! Cease fire!" yelled Michael Lipin, co-founder of the D.C. Snowball Fight Association, after more than an hour of snow filled combat.
But there was nowhere to hide. Left and right, up and down, the snowballs kept coming, and so did the laughter and the smiles. Although temperatures hovered just above the single digits on that cold snowed-in day, when the snow combatants finally settled down, they all posed for a group shot - which was promptly interrupted by another round of snowballs being pelted from all sides.
