Most comic book fans were hoping that Fox would take the Fantastic Four reboot a bit more seriously than previous attempts. The original film and its sequel both felt more like (terrible) Saturday morning cartoons than superhero blockbusters, and for many reasons: the acting, the writing, even the costumes the characters wore felt like something out of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

At the very least, it looks like Fox is taking the costumes a bit more seriously: the debut teaser trailer may have been a bit divisive, and new photos of the cast in costume that just surfaced online will likely be just as polarizing. These definitely aren't the traditional superhero costumes, so if you were looking for something a bit more standard, they'll likely disappoint.

That being said, if you're not a fan of bright blue spandex, then the new costumes should be right up your alley:

Debuting via Empire, it's clear that the costumes have a distinct military feel. Instead of bright blue onesies with giant numbers plastered across them, the new suits are essentially combat gear: vests, armor and all black. It's a huge departure from anything comic book fans have seen in recent years - while there have definitely been costume redesigns throughout comic book blockbusters, few have been so dramatic.

While some fans may cry foul at the seemingly toned-down costumes, there are few things to remember. First off, the film's not done yet - so, if there are any CGI pieces of the suits, they're probably not in these photos. Secondly, Fox has had plenty of success slimming down superhero costumes: people are now used to Wolverine in an all-black all-leather suit instead of blue-and-yellow tights.

If anything, the new combat-inspired suits could distance that Fantastic Four reboot from the films that preceded it...which is definitely something Fox wants to do.

Fantastic Four will hit theaters on August 7, 2015.
