The recent NPD results for February have been released, and they show yet again that Sony's PlayStation 4 came out on top, ahead of Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U. Not surprisingly, Microsoft is excited because the company's console is experiencing a vast increase in sales.

According to Microsoft, the sale of the Xbox One managed to increase by 84 percent month over month since the company slashed the price of the console to $349.99, down from $399.99. Despite that move, Microsoft could only manage to beat Sony for the final two months of 2014 but hasn't yet managed to do so in 2015.

Microsoft also pointed out that Xbox One users spent a maximum of 74 hours on Xbox Live throughout the month of February, which could be proof that the software giant is doing something right where its online service is concerned. Or maybe the multiplayer games are that good.

Interestingly enough, the 74 hours spent by gamers on Xbox Live is three times that of the amount of hours many folks spend on social media platforms such as Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter.

"And, Xbox Live set new records, quadrupling global gaming hours on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in February 2015 compared to February 2014," says Mike Nichols, corporate vice president of Xbox marketing at Microsoft. "We are grateful to our fans for choosing to play on Xbox One."

This is a good thing for Microsoft and the gaming industry as a whole because it cannot carry on with just the success of the PlayStation 4. The company now needs to do more to boost sales of the Xbox One not just in North America but worldwide.

It has been proven time and time again that being strong in one market is not enough when competition is strong in additional markets. Microsoft may need to crack the Chinese market if it wants to keep up with Sony because the PlayStation 4's success is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
