Fans waiting to pick up a copy of Mortal Kombat X for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 will now have to wait even longer.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment confirmed today that the 360 and PS3 version of the heavily anticipated fighter won't be releasing April 14 alongside the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC versions.

Instead, the last-generation versions of the game being developed by High Voltage Software will be releasing sometime this summer.

It's a bit of a downer for what has otherwise been a busy week of exciting Mortal Kombat X news. NetherRealm Studios confirmed that Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th will be making his way to Mortal Kombat X as part of the game's DLC. Also set to return are Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kenshi and Shinnok.

Sadly, it is not uncommon for last-gen ports of current-gen games to be released at a later date. The Xbox 360 version of Titanfall released months after the game's Xbox One and PC debut, and the critically acclaimed Shadow of Mordor released for Xbox 360 and PS3 in November of last year, a full two months after the current-gen version of the game was released. These ports are often handled by secondary studios that are responsible for squishing down the game's graphics and features in order for the game to perform on last-gen hardware.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Mortal Kombat X won't be the ideal way to play a game that was built from the ground up for Xbox One and PS4, but there are still plenty of fans of the series who have yet to upgrade their consoles. For them, it is definitely disappointing to have to wait months later to play the game everybody will be talking about when it's released in April.

Whether you are picking up Mortal Kombat X for current- or last-gen, there is plenty of fatality-filled goodness to keep you occupied before the game releases.
