British actor Idris Elba is reportedly in 'early talks' and could end up essaying the role of a major villain in Star Trek 3.

Elba could possibly join the cast of Star Trek 3 per a report from The Hollywood Reporter. The publication has learned from reliable sources that the 42-year-old actor is in talks with Paramount Pictures for playing the role of the main villain in Star Trek 3.

The movie, the third in the series, is currently in pre-production and will be directed by Justin Lin of The Fast and the Furious (3 to 6) fame.

"Idris Elba is in early talks to play the villain in Star Trek 3," sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter. Elba would be one of the new additions to the third installment of the franchise, which is in pre-production with Justin Lin at the helm," per The Hollywood Reporter.

The rumor has also been confirmed by Variety, which too sites sources.

Star Trek 3's cast already has Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin are all returning in their previous roles. Pegg, along with Doug Jung, is also penning the script for Star Trek 3.

Star Trek movies are a big screen remake of the popular '60s franchise, and has Pine starring as James T. Kirk, the captain of U.S.S. Enterprise starship. Saldana plays the role of Uhura, the communications officer and Quinto is Mr. Spock.

Star Trek 3 is the follow-up of Star Trek Into Darkness, the second movie in the series had another British actor — Benedict Cumberbatch — starring as the villain Khan Noonien Singh. The first movie in the franchise — Star Trek — was released in 2009.

Star Trek Into Darkness also featured the Klingons and rumors have been rife that they will return in Star Trek 3.

Producer of the series Damon Lindelof has been vague about the return of Klingons in Star Trek 3. During the premier of Star Trek Into Darkness, Lindelof let on that one could never get enough of Klingons and that the movie would give people a peek.

"But there's also a promise that there's a larger conflict on the horizon, and that would be fun to see," let on Lindelof at the time.

It is speculated that Elba could be a Klingon in Star Trek 3. Star Trek 3 is slated for release on July 8, 2016.
