Holy smokes, Batman! Actors Adam West and Burt Ward recently announced that they will once more step into the tights of Batman and Robin for a new animated feature being developed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 1960s Batman television series.

So move over, Ben Affleck, the original Batman, West, is once more donning his cape and cowl (although this time, in animated form) and will join the original Robin, Ward, in voicing their characters for a 90-minute feature film.

The dynamic duo announced the new movie at the Mad Monster Party horror convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This comes at a time when there's been renewed interest in the Batman 66 TV series, thanks to a release on Blu-Ray, a digital-first comic series with DC Comics and a new line of action figures based on the series.

At the convention, Ward questioned whether their agents would allow them to talk about the new project, but West interrupted with "Yes we can. I tell them what to do."

After that, Ward made the announcement and mentioned that there could be more than just one movie.

"You can look forward to a new, animated Batman full-length 90-minute feature coming out on the fiftieth anniversary," says Ward. "One of possibly two, but for sure one, that Adam and I are going to be doing the voices for."

After that, the crowd went wild. You can see video of the announcement here:

Batman aired on ABC from 1966 to 1968 with two episodes shown per week for its first season, after which it became a weekly series. The show was known for its campiness, as well as its upbeat music, moral lessons and cliffhangers that told kids to tune in again "same Bat-time, same Bat-channel" (this remains a popular catchphrase, even today).

The highly popular show is one of the most well-remembered and well-loved series of the 1960s.

The animated Batman 66 film will air in 2016, the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the Batman series originally airing on television.
