Through a post on Tumblr, Taylor Swift revealed that Andrea Swift, her mother, has been diagnosed with cancer.

Swift, keeping the specific details regarding the diagnosis of her mother vague to protect her privacy, posted a Tumblr note with the header "Just so you know..."

"I'm writing to you with an update I wish I wasn't giving you, but it's important and I'm used to sharing important events in my life with you. Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now," wrote Swift to start the note.

Swift then narrated that, for last Christmas, she asked her mother to have a screening for any possible health issues as one of her gifts to ease certain worries of the singer. Swift's mother agreed and went through the checkup just to appease Swift and her brother, despite feeling perfectly normal with no red flags for any possible health-related concerns.

The results of the checkup came back and revealed the diagnosis of cancer for Swift's mother, with Swift stating in the note that she would like to keep private details on the condition and treatment plan for her mother.

Swift continued by saying that her mother wanted her to reveal the news to the world because she is worried that the parents of Swift's fans are too busy to find time to have their selves checked up by a doctor for any possible health concerns. Perhaps reminding parents that they should get screened for health issues such as cancer could result in an early diagnosis and a higher chance of surviving the battle that would lie ahead. At the very least, screening would give peace of mind to families.

Swift's mother wanted to let the singer's fans know that she would not be attending as many shows as she can during Swift's current tour, due to the "important battle" that she will be fighting.

"Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this," Swift ends the note.

While Swift made the Tumblr post not to look for sympathy but to increase awareness among her fans to have them request their parents to undergo checkups, Twitter users reacted with an outpouring of support for Swift and her mother with the hashtag #PrayForMamaSwift.

Swift has previously been outspoken about her tight-knit relationship with her mother, who has shown full support for her daughter throughout her career.
