Recently, Netflix announced that it's working on its own nature documentary series, titled Our Planet.

The eight-part series, created by those responsible for the Emmy-winning Planet Earth, will take viewers into places on Earth we've never seen using 4K camera technology.

"The Planetprojects have enjoyed great success on Netflix and have helped launch new technologies for viewing at home," says Lisa Nishimura, Netflix's VP for original documentaries. "We think watching Our Planet, fully on demand in 4K will be an unforgettable experience for our members."

There's just one problem: the series will take four years to shoot, meaning that it won't actually arrive on Netflix until somewhere around 2019.

In the meantime, though, Netflix has some other great nature documentaries available on its site. Here are five of our favorites.

Virunga

This Oscar-nominated documentary takes us to Virunga National Park, which is one of the most biologically diverse places in the world. Virunga is also home to the last of the mountain gorillas, the subject of this 100-minute film, which follow park rangers as they try to protect these rare creatures from poachers, armed rebels and corporations encroaching upon their territory.

Leave It To Beavers

This 53-minute documentary has more than a just cute title. Showcasing the life of beavers, and the brilliant engineering they use to construct their dams, this documentary shows how studying beavers can teach us mere humans how to better handle water crisis, including shortages. However, there is also a lot of cute footage of the beavers themselves.

The Whale

Luna is a killer whale that lives off the coast of Vancouver that lost its family as a child. Alone and scared, Luna befriended the community of people that live there and the consequences of that friendship. The story is often touching and sometimes even a little frightening, but there's one thing for sure: you'll need your tissues for this one.

Animal Odd Couples

If you've seen the story of the domestic cat that befriended the lynx in a zoo and loved that, this is the documentary for you. The animal friendships here know no boundaries and include everything from a crow becoming mother to a meerkat to a chimp bottle-feeding a tiger.

Wings of Life

All around us, winged beings soar through the air, flying all around us, in all shapes and sizes. Wings of Life looks at many of these creatures, from bats to butterflies, from hummingbirds to bees. This one features some beautiful cinematography and brings these creatures to your living room up close.
