Mortal Kombat X has been released into the wild, and it didn't take long for developer NetherRealm to roll out the first patch for the game.

It has everything you would expect from a patch: improved performance, bug fixes and a few balance changes, including the addition of a whole new move for Takeda.

But fans may have noticed one other goody hidden within the update — a free skin for Sub-Zero. At no additional charge, every player who downloads Mortal Kombat X patch 1.02 will receive the "Klassic Sub-Zero" costume for free, which returns everybody's favorite ice ninja to his original, simplified look.

Better yet, every patch for the game will include a free skin like this. So says Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon:

Giving freebies to fans isn't new for NetherRealm. The developer adopted a similar strategy for its DC fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, as well as for its previous entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise — in which the developer handed out a number of "Klassic" skins for characters like Cyrax and Sektor via game updates.

NetherRealm will also be giving players the opportunity to play the game's DLC characters for free via Mortal Kombat X's premiere towers. These special challenge towers change over time and force players to complete them with a predetermined character. For launch week, players could give Goro a try in the premiere tower — even if they haven't purchased or unlocked the character via pre-order. The same goes for additional characters in the future. Even if you don't purchase Predator, for example, you'll still get the opportunity to take him for a spin.
