Google will unveil the next version of its Android mobile operating system at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference, with the operating system so far being called only as Android M.

The Android M will probably stick until the release of the mobile operating system, with Google highly unlikely to reveal the official name at the I/O conference.

However, it was discovered that Android M has been given the internal code name of Macadamia Nut Cookie, with such a name already being used by developers that are a part of the Android Open Source Program.

The internal code name of Android MNC has been floating around as rumors recently, but now, the Android Macadamia Nut Cookie internal code name is no longer a rumor, with the name already confirmed through references made by developers in the Android Open Source Project.

Developers have been using "mnc-dev" in conversations for the Android Open Source Project, with the acronym being discovered by Android Police as referring to Macadamia Nut Cookie.

However, knowing the internal code name of Android Macadamia Nut Cookie will most likely not matter for the regular Android user, as the name for Android M will be changed upon its release.

Previous versions of Android were also given internal code names, with previously used names including Android KLM, or Key Lime Pie, and Android LMP, or Lemon Meringue Pie. These were the internal code names used by Google for Android Lollipop and Android KitKat, respectively, with the official names of the operating systems taking over when the final versions were released to the public.

References made by developers to Android MNC include "Could you also make this change in mnc-dev branch? Thanks," and "Moving to mnc-dev; will cherry pick back to AOSP later."

As to possible names that Google could give to Android M, some of the possible ones include Macaroon, Marshmallow and Macadamia. The operating system could also be called Milky Way or Mars, which are brands of chocolates that could follow the usage of Google of KitKat. Whichever name Google chooses to brand Android M with, users can almost be certain that it will once again be of a sweet treat.

It has recently been reported that Android M will include native fingerprint authentication support, with speculations that Google will be introducing the feature at the upcoming I/O conference.

A fingerprint scanner feature has been in the pipeline for Google for some time, with plans to make the Nexus 6 device as the first one to include the feature. However, when the device was released in October of last year, the fingerprint scanner was nowhere to be found.
