Google has announced a price drop in its Nexus 6 phablet. Amazon and Best Buy have now followed suit and reduced the price of the Nexus 6 to $499 for the 32GB model and $549 for the 64GB version.

In the U.S., Google launched the Nexus 6 smartphone last October 2014 and started delivering the handset in November 2014. The smartphone is being offered by many retailers and carriers on contract or without any contract.

It has been a good few months since the launch of the device and until the Nexus 6 was made available for $649 (32GB) and $699 (64GB). However, Google has now revealed a price cut of $150 on both the storage options.

The latest price cut may be ideal for many customers who are looking to buy a brand new Nexus smartphone. Now Amazon and Best Buy have also matched the price of the handset as available from the Google Play store.

Amazon is offering both the Midnight Blue and the Cloud White color options for both the storage options of the Nexus 6 at the discounted price. However, Best Buy is selling just the Midnight Blue color.

While many customers would have hoped that Motorola Mobility will also reduce the price of the handset to be at par with Google, Amazon and Best Buy, the official Motorola Mobility website does not indicate any price reduction till now.

The Nexus 6 is offered by all the top four carriers in the U.S. including AT&T, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. However, T-Mobile is the only carrier that is offering the handset at a $100 discount, which means that the 32GB model of the smartphone is available from the carrier for $549 and the 64GB model for $599. T-Mobile had slashed the price of the Nexus 6 in mid-May this year.

The price war for Nexus 6 has started and it may not be long before other major retailers and carriers reduce the price of the handset in the near term.

The Nexus 6 has top-end features that can compete with many other existing smartphones in the market. A discount of $150 may attract many more customers to buy the handset in the coming weeks.

For now Amazon still has an edge over other retailers as Prime members will get the handset shipped free to them faster than any other retailer.
