Mirror's Edge was a great game stuck in a tough spot. It was unlike anything else in the gaming market, and yet, there were enough chinks in the armor to keep the game from being a huge success.

There were some great ideas buried within the game, but it just didn't connect with as many gamers as EA had hoped it would — and most assumed that Mirror's Edge would be a one-hit wonder.

That is, at least, until EA surprised everyone with a sneak peek of conceptual gameplay at E3 2014. Since then, fans of the original have been begging for any shred of info on the new game — sadly, the only thing the publisher has released is a name. This isn't Mirror's Edge 2 ... no, this is Mirror's Edge: Catalyst.

Thankfully, the long wait for information is finally over. As a part of its E3 2015 press conference, EA has finally shown off Mirror's Edge: Catalyst ... and from the looks of things, first-person parkour could make a comeback in a major way.

Sadly, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst wasn't onstage for too long, nor was it a true gameplay demo: everything was rendered in-engine, though that doesn't mean it was running live. Granted, the demo that EA showed was probably close to what the final game will look like, but there's no telling what the final game will look like until EA actually shows it off.

That being said, what EA did show was absolutely gorgeous. The sterile white cityscapes of the first game are back, and it's surprising just how much of an impact updated weather patterns can make. Character models are also a highlight — while it might be hard to see from a distance, each piece of clothing, skin or hair is intricately detailed — hopefully, the final game will be just as pretty.

In terms of story, EA did open up a bit, though it wasn't a whole lot. Mirror's Edge: Catalyst will serve as an origin story and will actually feature a concrete villain in Gabriel Krueger — the story was something of a weak point in the original game, but having a central, established villain could definitely help the sequel's story hit a bit harder.

There might not be much news in terms of story, but there's something even better: gamers now know when they'll be able to play the game! Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is due out on Feb. 23, 2016!
