San Diego Comic-Con is a convention unlike any other. The celebration of all things comic books and nerd culture absolutely dominates the San Diego area once a year, and the show is so big that tickets sell out in mere minutes.

And as if getting into the convention itself wasn't hard enough, navigating through a literal sea of people while trying to find that one perfect collectible can be a nightmare.

Then again, SDCC is so big for a reason: it's the one time of the year where nearly every major studio or publisher makes their big announcements. If you're interested in comic books, video games and superhero movies, there's a good chance you'll hear about something coming out of SDCC.

Though, for 2015, things may be a little different: just days after Marvel Studios announced that it would be skipping the convention, both Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures have confirmed that they, too, would be passing on SDCC.

So, why are some of Hollywood's biggest studios skipping out on the biggest comic book convention of the year? Somewhat surprisingly, it's not a hint at some gigantic, dramatic fight - simply put, the studios are either too busy to attend or have nothing to show, so they're not going.

A spokesman for the convention (via Variety) made it clear that the change in studio attendence wasn't all that big a deal:

"It wasn't a knock against Comic-Con ... the film cycles just didn't allow it."

Basically, the studios in question are either busy (Marvel Studios is currently filming Captain America: Civil War) or don't have enough worth showing (Sony and Paramount). Granted, it's still disappointing to know that the companies won't be there, but it's nice to know that it's not part of a larger issue.

Plus, it's not as if SDCC is really hurting for content: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens are both expected to have huge presences at this year's show. Sure, it would have been awesome to see just who the new Spider-Man is, or what Civil War will look like ... but it's just not in the cards.

San Diego Comic-Con officially begins on July 9. The show runs through July 12 at the San Diego Convention Center.
