Google announced the 50 state finalists for its Doodle 4 Google competition and the designs are stupendous. This year's theme was "If I Could Invent One Thing to Make the World a Better Place..." and students from around the country were eligible to compete in the contest, provided that they were in grades K-12 at a U.S. school.

On the contest website, Google described the theme for this year's contest and it was a doozy. The contestants had to submit designs for a Google Doodle, showing an invention of their choosing that they felt would make the world a better place.

"Before there was an airplane, there were doodles of cool flying machines. And before there was a submarine, there were doodles of magical underwater sea explorers. Since the beginning of time, ideas big and small, practical and playful, have started out as doodles," the main page of the website reads. "One talented young artist (grades K-12) will see his or her artwork on the Google homepage and receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant for his or her school."

The contest's guest judges and the Google Doodle team voted for the 50 state finalists and now it's America's chance to vote. You can vote for only one doodle in each age group. The five doodles with the most votes will then enter the final phase of the competition. Voting takes place from April 29 at 9:00 a.m. PST until May 9 at 5:00 p.m. PST. Although five finalists are chosen, only one can win. Still, the five finalists will all receive a Chromebook for getting that far in the competition.

The finalist will get a $30,000 scholarship for the college of their choosing and win their school a $50,000 grant. The winning doodle will be featured on Google's website on June 9, 2014 for an entire day. Check out some of the most creative doodles and vote for your favorites here.
