iMessage suffers a major outage and users who cannot send a message to their friends using Apple's proprietary messaging solution are flocking to Twitter to complain about the outage.

The iPhone maker has yet to confirm that iMessage is indeed currently suffering a loss of service. The company's own system status page shows iMessage is currently working, which, judging from the crowd of Twitter users griping about the messaging app's downtime, is not true.

"There are no reported issues at this time," Apple says.

The disruption appears to have begun at around 1 A.M. Eastern Time and is causing a variety of issues. Some users say iMessage is not delivering any messages they try to send, while others say the app is delivering messages as an iMessage and as an SMS. Other users say sending messages works perfectly well, but images sent through iMessage fail to go through.

A few users report they have found a temporary fix to the situation by closing and restarting the app. Others say turning the app off from the iPhone's Settings app then turning it on again also fixes the issue. However, some people who have tried doing so say the fix only works for a short time before iMessage starts acting up again.

The issue appears to affect a good number of iPhone users, but it is unclear right now if the outage is confined to the United States or if users in other parts of the globe are affected. There are also some people who say iMessage is working perfectly for them, as it most often does.

Apple is not known for openly responding to issues surrounding its products and services, but the firm has in the past acknowledged a similar service interruption for iMessage. In 2013, Apple announced via its system status page that 30 percent of all iMessage users suffered from a loss of service for around half an hour on July 9.

Most recently, Apple's iCloud and a handful of other online services suffered from a couple of outages in June. Apple did not acknowledge the downtime, but the affected services went back online after a couple of hours.

Meanwhile, users all over Twitter are bemoaning the loss of service for iMessage, while a few Android fan boys and girls are taking the opportunity to take a hit at Apple users.
