Motorola has announced it will be holding an event on May 13. The company is expected to announce its first new smartphone since being sold by Google to Lenovo.

When Google purchased Motorola in 2011 it appeared as if the move was intended to allow Google to instantly have its own smartphone and tablet company to better compete with Apple and Samsung. Motorola has long had a history of building iconic devices like the StarTAC, RAZR, and its Motorola DROID, which was exclusive to Verizon and became the first Android smartphone to give the iPhone a run for its money.

Google and Motorola began working on their first smartphone soon after the acquisition and the device was heavily hyped as being years ahead of anything that Apple or Samsung was offering. The smartphone was described as being contextually aware of its surroundings and could be controlled by a user's voice, it was also said to be completely customizable by users.

The handset turned out to be the Moto X and Google reportedly gave Motorola a $500 million marketing budget. Sales of the Moto X didn't live up to its hype and Motorola followed up by releasing the Moto G, a mid-range handset that has turned out to be the most successful smartphone in Motorola's history.

Motorola is now owned by Lenovo and has just sent out invites for a press event it will be holding on Tuesday, May 13 in London. The company is expected to launch the Moto E, which is expected to have similar specs to the Moto G, a much thinner body, and come in at a very affordable and possibly sub $100 price.

The Motorola Moto E is expected to feature a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 HD display and run Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The processor is believed to be a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and it will also contain 1GB of RAM.

The smartphone will likely ship with 4GB of internal storage and also include a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. The Moto E will reportedly be ultra thin at 6.2 millimeters and users will be able to customize the device through the use of snap on rear cases.

We'll be covering the Motorola event on May 13 and will bring you all the details.
