The wildly popular Angry Birds game is getting a sequel, with a "Bigger, Badder, Birdier" iteration officially en route.

Angry Birds launched six years ago and proved to be a true phenomenon, hitting whopping success with more than 2 billion downloads in total. A second part of the franchise will take things to the next level as Angry Birds 2.

The contents of the sequel remain unknown for now, as Rovio only teases Angry Birds 2 and says an official announcement is set for July 28. Up until now, Rovio has been trying to keep Angry Birds on top with a number of additions and variations, such as Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars and others (14 in total). These variations kept the game alive and momentum is still strong even now, after six years, contributing to the hype for Angry Birds 2.

The original Angry Birds stirred a whole frenzy worldwide, driving not only the trend of casual gaming on mobile, but also a slew of growth opportunities from Angry Birds licensed merchandise such as plush toys, T-shirts, lunchboxes and more. With a new iteration on the horizon, the Angry Birds phenomenon will likely expand even further, drawing more fans and generating more impressive downloads.

The mechanics of the game are expected to be along the same lines, having players launch bird projectiles into evil pigs' high tower. Angry Birds 2, however, should also bring its own exciting elements and additions. Considering that it's the first title that sports the official sequel status, Angry Birds 2 should offer more notable changes than the 14 variations of the original Angry Birds.

No other details are currently available regarding the highly anticipated Angry Birds 2 sequel, but the big announcement is just around the corner. Rovio will officially unveil the new game on July 28 in San Francisco, where the company is expected to offer more information on content, release date, supported platforms and more.

For now, one thing is for sure: Angry Birds 2 is ready to debut next week and declare a new war on pigs. The game will hit app stores two days later, becoming available as a free download on July 30.
