The refreshed Moto G and Moto X lines may have enjoyed their time in the spotlight during Motorola's press event yesterday, but a curious timepiece has come to light as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reviews a new product from the company. It might be the successor to the round-faced Moto 360 because the only thing certain about it is that the device is a smartwatch.

Motorola is seeking to have the unspecified smartwatch certified by the FCC. The Lenovo-owned electronics manufacturer submitted the application to the commission last month.

With the application to have the smartwatch's wireless radios certified, Motorola gave up the information required. While there aren't any pretty pictures to look at, Motorola has tipped its hand.

In parts of the application, Motoral described the product as "wrist worn device with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth." In other areas, it described the device as having a "small band" and a "metal body." In others still, it flat out called the device a smartwatch.

"This device contains an embedded Bluetooth device, Wi-Fi device, and MOTOtalk capabilities that Motorola Mobility confirms are compliant with the applicable Part 15 C regulations," stated Motorola in the device's cover letter. "Personal Hotspot operation is only supported in the 2.4 GHz band for this equipment class."

Motorola revealed that the new smartwatch will be available in other countries beyond the United States.

"This device also contains functions, and operates within frequency bands, that are not authorized within the United States or its territories," Motorola stated. "This filing is only applicable to supported US operations."

Many expected the Moto 360 2 to be unveiled at Motorola's July 28 event. That expectation was influenced, at least in part, by remarks made by Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing back in May.

Yuanqing was speaking about Lenovo's partnership with Motorola, when he suggested that the two companies were looking at announcing new smartwatches at some point this summer.

"We have many new models in development with the Moto brands," Yuanqing said. "So you may see in summer us launching some very exciting products, including phones and watches."
