For survival horror fans, there's one classic game that stands above all else: Resident Evil 2. It was an evolution of everything that made the original great and pushed the boundaries of what a survival horror game could be.

Resident Evil 2 helped solidify the genre's place in gaming culture and was one of the best-selling PlayStation games of all time ... and yet, for whatever reason, the game has yet to be remade.

In an age where some games only go a few years before being "remastered," it's astonishing that Capcom hasn't given Resident Evil 2 a modern-day makeover. For years, fans have been begging for an HD trip through Raccoon City ... but Capcom never seemed all that interested. At least not until recently.

After the successful HD remastering of the original Resident Evil game, Capcom announced that they were interested in producing similar projects. Naturally, fans thought this meant a return to Resident Evil 2 — and, while the second HD remaster eventually turned out to be Resident Evil 0 HD, it seems as if Capcom is finally ready to consider an HD update to the franchise's second installment.

In a post on the official Facebook page, Capcom R&D Division 1 fans asked what they wanted to see from a potential return to Resident Evil 2:

"Enthusiasm for a Resident Evil 2 Remake is something we've been hearing from you over the years, and has drawn some recent attention in the media.

"However, as the team owns the RE brand, we're not certain how we feel about this approach, and would like to ask your honest and frank opinion about the "Resident Evil 2 Remake" and what the brand identity is supposed to be about?"

With this post in mind, two conclusions can be made: first, Capcom hasn't started working on a Resident Evil 2 HD remake just yet — but, more importantly, the company is seemingly ready to start working on one if the interest is there.

Of course, as with all things on the Internet, the comments were divided: some fans were hoping for a proper follow-up to Resident Evil 6, while others asked for a complete overhaul. However, it's clear that the vast majority of Resident Evil fans want one thing and one thing only: a true HD remake of Resident Evil 2.

At this point, it's impossible to tell if anything will actually come out of all this. Capcom definitely seems to be toying with the idea of Resident Evil 2 HD, and with the fan-made Resident Evil 2: Reborn garnering so much attention, perhaps the publisher is finally confident in moving forward with the project. Then again, it's entirely possible that Capcom is just gathering information.

One way or the other, it looks like fans will just have to wait and see.
