The latest update for the iOS version of Google Maps adds night mode navigation and the ability to make customized label for certain places.

While the Android version of the app has had the feature for some time now, it is a new addition to the iOS version of Google Maps.

Night mode on Google Maps is designed to reduce the eye strain of users, as once activated, the glaring white backdrop of the app is switched into a darker version. The darker display will make it easier for the user's eyes to switch back and forth from the nighttime surroundings to the screen of the iOS device.

The feature is automatic, but only works when the user is utilizing the turn-by-turn directions feature of Google Maps. The feature is also based on the time of the day, rather than on how much light there really is around the user.

While it can be considered a minor update, the night mode feature of Google Maps will definitely be a welcome one to make app easier to use.

In addition to the introduction of night mode, Google Maps for iOS will also now allow users to label certain places and see these labels on the app and in its search suggestions.

Users can give places labels such as "Home" and "Office," with the app allowing users to save specific addresses. For faster access to important or frequently searched locations, users can enter the address, swipe the screen from the bottom, tap on the three dots that appear in the top right corner of the display and then tap on the edit name option. The user can then give customized labels to these places, which will show up in the app and in the user's search results.

The update to the iOS version of Google Maps will also now allow users to edit the photo captions that they post to locations, in case of mistakes in the photo captions being posted.

In a previous update, Google Maps made it easier for users to share their maps and locations to other users, now allowing users to share their location through Facebook right from within the app. Users can simply drop a pin on Google Maps and then post the location on Facebook or send the location to contacts on Facebook's Messenger.
