After weeks of rumors and speculation, Capcom has officially announced that Resident Evil 2 will be getting a HD remake.

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who helped bring the HD remake of the original Resident Evil to consoles earlier this year, announced Capcom had officially given the Resident Evil 2 remake project the green light in a short YouTube video.

"You've been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven't been able to make it happen...until now," Hirabayashi says.

A few weeks ago Capcom's R&D division took to Facebook to ask Resident Evil fans what they would want in a Resident Evil 2 remake while also asking what the Resident Evil brand meant to them. Fans responded in droves, with many of the top comments calling for a return to the survival horror roots of the franchise.

"We at R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you've been waiting for," Hirabayashi says.

Hirabayashi goes on to say that it will be a while before there are any updates on the project, but that Capcom will be informing fans directly through its Facebook page.

Unlike the HD remaster of the original Resident Evil and the upcoming HD remaster of Resident Evil 0, it sounds like the remake for Resident Evil 2 will be much more extensive. Updated graphics for current consoles is a given, but Capcom might also look at reworking the game's infamous tank control scheme as well. That's what a fan remake of Resident Evil 2 is doing, and so far the project has been turning a lot of heads. Capcom may look to take a page from the fan project, but there will be no pleasing everybody. Some fans want updated controls, others want the original game in its entirety but with a new coat of paint.

Regardless of what exactly Capcom chooses to do with the remake, it's great news for fans. Resident Evil 2 originally released on the first PlayStation back in 1998. A lot has changed since then, and this way newer fans to the franchise will be able to experience one of the best entries of the franchise is beautiful high definition.
