Samsung has officially announced its next smartwatch, the Gear S2. The announcement comes after a number of teasers from the company, however this is the best look we have gotten of the device so far.

Unfortunately we still don't know when the device will be released or how much it will cost, however it is likely that we will get those details at IFA in Berlin this week.

"For the past several years, Samsung has pioneered and advanced the wearables category, bringing brave new concepts to the smart wearables market," said JK Shin, CEO and Head of Samsung's Mobile Business. "The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung's most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout-and ensuring that you get more out of every moment in your day, by making it smarter and ultimately more personal and fun."

Not only has Samsung revealed more details about the device, but it has also revealed that it will be available in two versions - the Samsung Gear S2 and the Samsung Gear S2 Classic, aimed at those who want a "more timeless watch design."

The 1.2-inch display on the device will have a resolution of 360x360, and has a rotating bezel surrounding it. This bezel, along with the home and back buttons, and the touch display, are the ways that the device is controlled. NFC is built in to the device and will allow for mobile payments, most likely on Samsung's own mobile payment system, Samsung Pay. The company is promising a battery life of between two and three days.

Like many other devices on the market, the Gear S2 will keep track of things like fitness, as well as show notifications for texts, emails, calendar, and so on. It will include 4GB of onboard storage and 512MB of RAM, along with IP68 dust and water resistance.

Of course, while the device does look great, it's not perfect. The device runs Samsung's own operating system, Tizen, and will not have access to the growing list of Android Wear apps. Samsung says that it's working with a growing list of app developers, however that list is still a long way behind what is offered on Android Wear. Not only that, but it will also likely only be compatible with Samsung's newest devices.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile have all announced plans to sell the Gear S2.
