I was excited to try out LG's new Rolly Keyboard — and I'm not the sort of gadget blogger who tends to get excited about, you know, trying out keyboards. However, if executed properly, the peripheral could offer a great solution to the issue of carrying around a physical keyboard for tablets, smartphones and the like.

Certainly, it looks good on the face of it — the keyboard rolls up, row by row, in a tight little cylinder that can be slipped into a pocket, backpack, etc. It can also store multiple devices so users can quickly swap between their phones, tablets and such.

It's not quite as handy as the devoted buttons on Logitech's new keyboard — and instead, involves pressing multiple keys simultaneously, but what are you gonna do?

All well and good, right? However, the whole thing sort of breaks down when you actually attempt to type on the thing. The response time is pretty decent, but the peripheral is just no fun to type on. It lets you spread out a bit more than your device's touchscreen, sure, but the typing experience really harkens back to the early days of third-party smartphone keyboards.

If the company manages to improve the typing experience in generation two, it could have a winner on its hands. For now, it's probably best to just sit this round out.
