Following in the footsteps of Plex, which will now support the Apple TV, another popular media streaming app is likewise making its way to Apple's latest TV device: VLC Media Player.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, a VideoLAN lead developer, revealed in his Sept. 14 blog post that the team is currently doing a facelift on the VLC app and that it will soon be coming to the Apple TV.

"Finally, some code to build VLCKit for the new tvOS was merged," Kempf wrote in his post. "It's very early though, but we have video playback!"

VLC is known as a media app, allowing users to play various audio and video files in a multitude of formats. The app is free to download for all major operating systems. It also has the ability to play almost all imaginable video or audio files, which perhaps explains why it has been well-received by many users across the globe.

To date, the app has already landed on Amazon Fire TV and Android TV. This will be the first time VLC will officially run on Apple TV hardware. The app has only been limited to Macs as well as iOS devices.

According to reports, with the new VLC app on Apple TV, users may have more choices for formats and sources than they usually get.

No word yet on exactly when this update will be rolling out, however. At the very least, the news gives users something to look forward to.

Tech Times also reported that the long-awaited media streaming content service Plex is confirmed to be made available for Apple TV users in the near future.

"The future of television is apps. We second that! Anxiously awaiting @APPLEOFFICIAL tvOS developer beta info! Who wants Plex on Apple TV??," tweeted Plex.

This means users will no longer have to do a jailbreak or look for a smart workaround to be able to access a Plex client.

Reports say the new Apple TV will utilize Apple's new iOS-based, TV-optimized operating system named tvOS. It is equipped with a full app store, which means that third-party applications will be made available to users, similar with the App Store for iOS devices.

The new Apple TV is slated to be released in October this year. The TV will come in two models, which include a 32GB variant as well as the 64GB model. The prices for the two variants are $149 and $199, respectively.
