Windows 10 is apparently quite popular among Steam users, as adoption rates are already at nearly 25 percent and constantly increasing.

As it turns out, more than one in five gamers using Steam is already running Microsoft's latest operating system. Windows 10 is now the second most popular OS among Steam users, trailing only Windows 7.

This data comes straight from the source, as Valve has officially released its new Hardware & Software Survey for September 2015. Through these monthly surveys, the company collects data regarding the types of hardware and software Steam users rely on. The information helps Steam make informed decisions in tech investments, as well as the products it should offer.

The latest survey reveals that the overall share for Windows dropped a bit compared to the previous month, but Windows 10 sees strong adoption rates among Steam users. In just two months, the new version of Windows has already surpassed both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined. At this rate, the possibility of Windows 10 becoming the top choice next year cannot be discounted, although it still seems unlikely that it will dethrone Windows 7 anytime soon.

Windows 7 64-bit still tops the charts as the favorite OS of Steam users, with a 37.48 percent share, despite a 2.23 percent drop from the previous month. Windows 10 64-bit comes in second place with a 23.99 percent share, marking a 7.6 percent increase month over month. Windows 8.1 64-bit ranks third with 18.62 percent, seeing a 4.74 percent drop month over month. Rounding up the top five are Windows 7 and Windows XP 32-bit with 8.51 and 2.56 percent, respectively.

Mac OS X got a 3.23 percent share in total, for all of its versions, while Linux got 0.94 percent in total, with both seeing minor increases over the previous month.

In other words, Windows still dominates Steam — boasting a 95.71 percent share in total, from all of its versions combined. At the same time, the survey shows that Windows 10 adoption rates are faster among Steam gamers than the general population.

Windows 10 adoption rates are expected to increase even more in the following months, as more users migrate to the latest OS.
