During the Tokyo Game Show, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 would receive a price cut in the Japanese market, which indicated the same thing would happen in the west as well.

Since then, it was no longer a matter of if but when. Now it seems the date of the announcement is drawing close.

The video game section on Target had displayed an image that suggested the PS4 would be down for a $50 price cut this year.

Should this happen, the console would cost the same as the cheapest Xbox One, which is being sold for $349.99 at brick-and-mortar retail stores and online. It would also place more pressure on Microsoft as it has been proven that the Xbox One at $349.99 is still no match for the PlayStation 4 at $399.99.

We're not 100 percent confident when Sony will make the big announcement, but if we were to bet, we'd suggest fans look out for it before Black Friday. Sony would be wise to take advantage of the Black Friday shopping rush, along with the battle of Cyber Monday the following week.

As for Microsoft, this may be the right time for the company to yet again slash the price of the cheapest Xbox One down to $299.99 because the console performs best when it is not on the same price point with the PlayStation 4.

We expect Microsoft to drop a Black Friday deal bombshell that will be gobbled up by fans, and that price will keep going for the next year or two, depending on how Sony reacts.

When it comes down to Nintendo, we can't be sure what that company aims to do in order to prop up the Wii U. We do know that something must be done before the end of the year if the console is ever to stand a chance when the Christmas holidays roll in.
