When Apple released its latest OS X 10.11, also known as El Capitan, on Sept. 30, Office for Mac 2016 went bananas, causing disgruntled users to criticize both Microsoft and the Cupertino firm.

A user named bluedoplhin makes light of the situation by making jokes on the Microsoft forum.

"Its called Office "2016" because that's the expected date it 'might' work, although when in 2016 is not clear, assuming we are using the Gregorian calendar!" bluedoplhin posted and continued to point out Microsoft's official statement, which says that Office 2016 is "compatible with Windows 7 or later, Office 2016 for Mac requires Mac OS X 10.10."

Unfortunately, a lot of users can't take this issue casually because it affects their work.

"Is there an update on this? It's now a further 5 days since your post. I am currently unable to do any work due to Office 2016 crashing continuously. This is crazy," user ShonaghW wrote on the long Microsoft thread.

It seems that the reoccurring error is not new, as some Mac users reported that they have been experiencing similar problems on previous OS X versions as well. Also, users with other Office versions seem to run into such errors too.

The issue was first brought up to Microsoft on July 10, 2015, and Microsoft representative Faisal Jeelani addressed the problem.

"We are working hard to fix El Capitan issues and will keep pushing out updates to Mac Outlook that will contain these fixes. In the meantime, we recommend that you keep upgrading to the latest beta of El Capitan and Mac Outlook as and when they release," Jeelani replied to the thread starter on July 11, 2015.

Microsoft seems to be taking long in providing a fix for this, and Apple doesn't seem to have any comments yet, but rest assured, the two tech firms are working together to resolve this case.

"We have isolated the hang after crash / force quit that impacts all Office 2016 apps as well as Outlook 2016 repeated crash after launch. We are working with Apple on a solution, please stay tuned," Microsoft program manager Sunder Raman posted on another thread.
