The smartphone industry witnessed the launch of a number of handsets in Q3 2015, which included the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium and the iPhone 6s Plus. Both the devices have top-notch hardware specs that customers search for in a premium device.

Here is how the two flagships stand-off against each other.

Display

The iPhone 6s Plus sports a 5.5-inch display with 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution and 401 ppi. On the other hand, the Xperia Z5 Premium is the first smartphone to tout a 4K display. The Sony mobile phone has a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels and 801 ppi.

Processor and RAM

A custom made A9 processor made by Apple and 2 GB of RAM powers the iPhone 6s Plus. The Xperia Z5 Premium runs on a 2.0 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3 GB of RAM.

Storage

The iPhone 6s Plus is available in 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB internal storage options. The Apple phone does not come with a microSD card, which means customers cannot expand the memory further. The new Xperia device has 32 GB of on-board storage, which can be expanded to up to 200 GB with a microSD card.

Camera

The latest iPhones are equipped with a 12 MP iSight camera and a 5 MP FaceTime camera. However, the Live Photo feature brings an entirely new experience of image capturing on a smartphone. The iPhone 6s Plus is capable of taking a short video of 1.5 seconds before a photo is clicked followed by a 1.5 second video after capturing the image, which puts life to pictures.

The camera on the Xperia Z5 Premium is also one of the best in class. The Sony smartphone has an enhanced 23 MP rear-facing and a 5.1 MP front-facing camera.

"Xperia Z5 features Sony's brand new large 1/2.3 Exmor RSTM for mobile 23 MP sensor and F2.0 G Lens — it's Sony's first completely re-imagined smartphone camera module since Xperia Z1, designed with Sony's interchangeable lens camera αTM technology for clear, vivid imagery every time," said Sony.

The Japanese handset maker claims that the camera in the newest Xperia Z5 Premium has the fastest autofocus in a smartphone. The powerful blend of accuracy and speed lets the phone camera capture split-second moments with ease.

Connectivity

Both the iPhone 6s Plus and the Xperia Z5 Premium support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity.

Operating System

iOS 9 is the latest Apple mobile operating system (OS) update and the iPhone 6s Plus comes pre-installed with it.

Google has launched its latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow but the Xperia Z5 Premium runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop. However, the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow may soon make its way to the Sony handset.

Form factor

The Xperia Z5 Premium measures 6.08 x 2.99 x 0.31 inches, or 154.4 x 76 x 7.9 mm, which makes it smaller and thinner than the iPhone 6s Plus that measures 6.23 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches, or 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm.

The Sony mobile phone weighs 6.35 ounces, or 180 grams, making it slightly lighter than the new-generation iPhone that weighs 6.77 ounces, 192 grams.

Price

The price of the Xperia Z5 Premium remains unknown till now. Expansys has listed the Xperia Z5 at a price of $649.99, which means that the Xperia Z5 Premium will have a higher price tag in comparison to the former.

The base model of the unlocked iPhone 6s Plus costs $749.

Apple iPhones have many fans and the high-end iPhone 6s Plus does not need any selling. However, the 4K display, enhanced camera and storage capacity of the Xperia Z5 Premium may give the smartphone an edge over the Apple offering.
