Commuters on select routes in England and Wales will get faster Wi-Fi speeds in the next three to four years, which will be partly funded by the fine expected to be imposed on Network Railways.

The UK government is expected to spend £90 million for faster W-Fi connections that will allow passengers on trains into cities such as London, Bedford, Brighton, Manchester, Leeds and more to connect to the Internet for free.

Market observers believe that the faster Wi-Fi connection proposal will be partly funded by the likely multi-million penalty of around £70 million that may be imposed on Network Rail, which is responsible for looking after the tracks, stations, signaling and railway infrastructure in the UK.

The UK Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) holds Network Rail responsible for missing key punctuality targets, promised to customers on its long-distance services over the last five years. According to ORR's punctuality target, Network Rail has to ensure that 92.5 percent of the trains must arrive "on time." ORR's defines on time as within five minutes off the scheduled time for local services and 10 minutes from the scheduled time for long-distance services.

Some market observers believe that the £70 million fine is unnecessary as the fine amount can be used by Network Rail to improve the rail infrastructure to improve travel time. The fine may affect regular track maintenance, which becomes a safety issue for all passengers. According to reports, the fine will be beneficiary to passengers as it will be partly used to offer up to 10 times faster Internet connection to them.

Network Rail suggests that Wi-Fi Internet connection will be offered to passengers via equipment, which will be installed alongside the track. Currently, Wi-Fi connection is offered through satellite signal as they go along.

Around 30 percent of network carries around 70 percent of the total passengers in the UK and the government suggests that faster Wi-Fi will initially be offered in the nation's busy commuter lines.

With the surge in mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, the requirement of Internet on the go has also increased in the recent years. Many people want to access their documents, files, music, media and more while traveling in trains. A steady and fast free Wi-Fi connection will help passengers to keep themselves entertained during long or short train travels in the UK.
