The Time Lord may not be getting the big screen treatment anytime soon, but Dr. Who fans may look forward to seeing another character get his very own movie. The robotic time dog himself, K9, will be getting his very own film penned by one of his original creators, Bob Baker.

Baker was one of the writers of the original "Dr. Who" classic series from the 1970s. He created K9 for the 1977 "Dr. Who" episode titled "The Invisible Enemy" and since then the tin mutt has been intermittently making appearances throughout each incarnation of the hit British time and space traveling show.

According to a press release sent out by Doctor Who News, the film is tentatively being called "K9: Timequake" and will be set deep in outer space. Our trusty hero K9 will be facing multi-dimensional adventures against asteroids, aliens, and one of the most famous Dr. Who villains ever: Omega, the megalomaniac.

Baker was also the creator of Omega in the Dr. Who universe, and it will be quite interesting to see him with K9 on the silver screen in a multi-million dollar project. For those not in the Whovian know, Omega is an important part of Dr. Who lore as he is one of the founding members of the Time Lords, the society to which Dr. Who himself belongs.

Baker's other film credits include the successful clay-mation film short series, "Wallace & Gromit," and the full-length movie, "Wallace & Gromit: Curse of The Were-Rabbit."

Penning the movie with Baker will be Paul Tam who also wrote the book, "The Essential Book of K9."

"Bob and Paul are very excited about the project and having Omega in the movie will bring a great new dimension to both characters as K9 faces his greatest challenge. The names of the director and [principal] cast will be released in the new year. Regular updates will be posted over the next few months," said a spokesperson for the producers.

"K9: Timequake" is currently set for a 2017 release, just in time for K9's 40th birthday.
