Destiny 2 Not Coming To The PC As Soon As You'd Hope, And It'll Be Stuck On Battle.net
Destiny players might have to wait a bit before Destiny 2 arrives on the PC. Not only that, but the game will also only be available on one distribution service.
Yes, the PC version of Bungie's multiplayer first-person shooter will feature more frames per second (fps) than its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One counterparts. But it'll only run on Battle.net, instead of Steam or other distribution services, which is a curious, if not interesting, choice.
Destiny 2 is the first game not made by Blizzard to ever come on the platform, and maybe that's for the better. Battle.net has historically been pretty reliable when it comes to online multiplayer gameplay, and it also means that Destiny 2 will be able to leverage the platform's robust gamer community. That said, Bungie will still be in charge of the game's servers.
Destiny 2 To Be Exclusive On Battle.net
Eric Hirshberg, Activision's CEO, and Mike Morhaime, Blizzard Entertainment's president, confirmed during a livestream Thursday, May 18, that Destiny 2 will exclusively be available on its Battle.net platform, the "central nervous system for Blizzard games."
The news isn't a surprise, however. Activision Blizzard owns Blizzard Entertainment and has an exclusive publishing deal with Bungie, Destiny 2's developers. Still, this could mean that Blizzard may be open to hosting other games moving forward, possibly even future Activision titles. The company says Destiny 2 is the only non-Blizzard game it's supporting for now, although it's thinking about adding more.
Could this be the first step in Blizzard attempting to usurp Steam in the PC distribution race? It's too early to tell. But it seems it's where it's headed.
Destiny 2 On PC Features
The PC version of Destiny 2 offers a lot more than the PS4 and Xbox One versions. For one, the game's resolution on PC can go as high as 3,820 x 2,160, and that's with uncapped framerate, to be clear.
It'll also offer full mouse and keyboard support with custom key mapping, text chat, an adjustable field of view, and a PC settings screen for those who want to fine-tune the graphics even further. The game also brings support for 21:9 monitors.
Destiny 2 Release Date On PC
Destiny 2 will launch earlier on consoles, hitting the PS4 and Xbox One on Sept. 8. The PC version, as Blizzard now confirms, will arrive later than the console versions, with a final date expected "in the coming weeks," according to Luke Smith, Destiny 2's director. There's no word whether Destiny 2 will feature 4K gaming at 60 fps on the PS4 Pro, but such details should presumably be announced soon.
Destiny 2 is a forthcoming online-only multiplayer title that's the direct sequel of 2014's Destiny. It follows a year after the events of Destiny: Rise of Iron. This is the first time the series will launch on PCs running Windows.
