Samsung has previously raised eyebrows in the whole tech scene some time earlier this year by deciding to cut off the microSD card slot from the new Galaxy S21 flagship smartphone. Though there are a number of smartphone users collectively shrugged, some of them were outraged.

External SD dead?

The whole option to be able to plug in a certain external SD is said to be a very vital feature especially for those who really like taking photos as well as downloading films. The big question asked by a story by The Star is if the external SD card is really necessary these days with cloud and internal storage increasingly growing.

Companies just like Apple and Samsung, however, don't really think that it is necessary. A certain smartphone analyst reportedly predicts that future phones will become entirely portless. Samsung's main decision to kill the microSD card port might just be yet another sign of a certain trend towards just only internal storage on the phone.

Internal memory or microSD?

The article then notes that of course, a number of phones will still let users maximize the storage with the additional memory card, but this might just be for now. In principle, however, experts now tend to recommend using a sort of in-built memory over the previous external microSD card. This is due to the apps not being able to be installed on an SD card due to internal memory being more reliable and much faster.

Forgoing the additional SD card space is still quite a tough sell to the newer phones where the use of videos in high quality 4K resolution which can easily fill up 128GB. This is why experts note that amateur photographers reportedly taking photos in HD resolution and shooting a number of videos should opt for larger internal storage like 256GB or 512GB.

The effect of normal applications, photos, and videos

Then again, for those paying for certain things like Google, Apple, or Microsoft for the cloud storage space might allow them to get by with just as low as 64GB storage space. This is provided that users would delete their photos regularly once they are backed up to cloud storage.

For those listening to loads of music or even watching a lot of films should also try to consider going past 128GB when it comes to their phone's internal storage space. This is especially recommended for those that stream songs and films. An hour's commute trying to stream both Spotify and Netflix on a simple train can already drain 20GB contract.

An article by The Verge last January 14 tackled how the new Samsung Galaxy S21 removed the microSD in general. This huge move, as of the moment, is still not yet seen in Samsung's competitors and it remains to be seen when and if other smartphone manufacturers would follow in their footsteps and remove the microSD.
