"My latest survey indicates that Apple's own iPhone 5G modem chip development may have failed," said the tech expert via his official Twitter account.

Before he made this prediction, the giant iPhone maker claimed that the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup would offer the new 5G modem feature, hinting that it would design and manufacture more advanced in-house 5G chipsets for its iOS devices.

This new iOS smartphone is expected to be launched around September 2023. Critics explained that the 5G modem is the plan of Apple so that it can move away from Qualcomm, Apple's main SoC supplier for iPhones.

Despite the feature not being integrated yet, many speculations claim that new SoCs will offer it developed and produced by TSMC, another chipmaker partner of Apple.

However, Kuo claimed that the chipset development issues in the market caused Apple's 5G modem integration attempt to fail.

Although this is the case, the Apple analyst clarified that the iPhone manufacturer will still continue working on the 5G modem tech for iOS devices.

But, it will not arrive with the upcoming iPhone 15 in the 2023 launch.

Why Does Apple Want To Integrate 5G Modem Tech?

Ming-Chi Kuo explained that the main reason why Apple wants to start integrating the 5G modern tech is that it wants to lessen the SoCs Qualcomm supplies.

Recently, the tech giant manufacturer said that it aims to produce its own 5G chipsets, covering around 80% of its new iOS devices.

This means that Qualcomm's 5G SoCs will only cover around 20% of the next-gen iPhones that Apple will launch from 2023 onwards.

But, with Kuo's prediction, it seems like this goal is now uncertain. He even claimed that Qualcomm will still supply 100% of Apple's 5G chipsets for its upcoming iPhone 15 units.

On the other hand, the EU previously announced that Apple can only sell iPhones with USB-C charging ports starting in 2024.

Meanwhile, Ericsson decided to ban 5G iPhones and iPads because of a new patent issue.
