Google in the Works Since 2021

Internal documents reveal that Google had been working on the app since the fourth quarter of 2021. The app's description highlighted its ability to facilitate interesting and action-oriented conversations for Gen Z users, utilizing large language models to generate realistic text.

The envisioned app seemed to promise a next-generation conversational experience resembling something from a science fiction novel.

In one example shared with CNBC, a friendly cartoon-like character engaged in conversation, asking follow-up questions and even providing relationship advice. The aim was to create an engaging and relatable digital companion for Gen Z individuals.

As part of an internal reorganization, Google has recently shifted its focus away from the Bubble Characters project, halting its development.

This decision coincided with a change in priorities within the Assistant organization, which is responsible for virtual assistant applications and interactive conversations across platforms.

Google Focusing on Bard

In response to this realignment, executives in the Assistant organization have turned their focus to Bard, an AI project intended to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT

As a result, certain members of the Bubble Characters team have been reassigned to contribute to the development of Bard, ensuring its readiness for launch.

Google has not officially commented on the decision to scrap the Gen Z chatbot app. The move underscores the dynamic nature of Google's product development process, where projects can be reprioritized or discontinued based on strategic considerations and internal changes.

While the specific reasons behind the decision to abandon Bubble Characters remain undisclosed, it reflects the challenges and complexities of developing AI-driven conversational applications.

The year 2022 has witnessed a significant rise in the popularity of AI chatbots, largely driven by the success of ChatGPT. This advanced language model developed by OpenAI captivated users worldwide with its ability to generate human-like responses and engage in meaningful conversations.

The success of ChatGPT sparked an AI race, with various companies striving to develop their own AI-powered chatbots to compete in the growing market.

As one of the key players in the technology industry, Google recognized the potential and importance of AI chatbots. In response to the demand and competition, Google introduced its own AI chatbot, Bard.
