It's coming up on one year since Motorola announced its latest Verizon DROID smartphones. A new report provides new details and we also get a look at one of the smartphone's rear case.

When Apple was shopping the original iPhone to U.S. carriers, the company initially wanted to partner with Verizon to be the exclusive carrier of the revolutionary smartphone. Verizon wasn't convinced that the iPhone would be big enough to justify Apple's control and financial terms. At the time, it was unheard of for a cellphone maker to get a percentage of the service revenue from each iPhone sold.

Apple gave up on trying to convince Verizon that the iPhone would change the mobile world forever and it's a decision that the carrier ultimately ended up regretting. Apple partnered with Cingular and then AT&T in 2007 in a multi-year exclusive contract that guaranteed AT&T would be the only U.S. carrier to sell the popular smartphone. Verizon would eventually get the iPhone 4 in January 2011 and soon the restrictions were also lifted for both Sprint and T-Mobile to offer iPhones.

During the years Verizon was losing subscribers to AT&T due to the iPhone, the company partnered with Motorola on what would become the first smartphone to give Apple's iPhone a run for its money and it would be an exclusive to Verizon.

Verizon has continued its popular DROID family of smartphones and now comes word of some new details about Motorola's upcoming DROID smartphones for Verizon from a reliable source.

"Upcoming Motorola devices: Abbagoochie and Valocia - both run on Snapdragon 801s (former is allegedly next handset in Droid Maxx line, with latter the next Droid Mini)." posted evleaks on the tipster's site.

Verizon's DROID MAXX has been an extremely popular smartphone for the carrier due to its large 3.500 mAh battery in a thin form factor that gives the smartphone up to 48 hours of mixed usage. It can be pretty much assumed that the DROID MAXX 2 "Abbagoochie" will continue Motorola's tradition of bringing super long battery life to this smartphone.

An image of what is reportedly an unannounced Verizon Motorola DROID smartphone's rear case recently leaked revealing cutouts for its rear camera. It's not clear which model this case will end up on at this point.

We'll keep you updated with any new Verizon DROID smartphone news as it comes in.
