Star Wars fans that have been waiting for virtual reality content will only have to hold on until Dec. 2, which is when Google and Verizon will launch such an experience for the massively popular franchise.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released worldwide on Dec. 18, and fans can enjoy a virtual reality experience that ties directly into the movies opening two weeks before that.

The collaboration will feature a first-of-its-kind serialized Google Cardboard VR experience which puts together a compelling story that connects to the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The announcement was made on the official Star Wars website, where it was also noted that the Google Cardboard VR experience will be accessed through the official Star Wars app, available for devices powered by both iOS and Android.

In addition to the content, Google is also releasing Cardboard "devices" with a Star Wars theme to them to use for the Star Wars virtual reality experience, which would be a nice bonus to hardcore fans.

The Star Wars Cardboards can be purchased exclusively through Verizon retail stores beginning Dec. 2, with four different designs to choose from.

The virtual reality content for the collaboration will be created by the ILMxLAB of Industrial Light & Magic, which has been working on developing immersive content over the past six months, which should give an indication on how awesome it could be.

The collaboration with Google for the Star Wars virtual reality experience is a part of the wider Awaken The Force promotion, which also allows Google users to choose between the light side and the dark side of the Force and have their Google apps branded according to the chosen side. The apps and devices include in the promotion include Android Wear Watches, Google Calendar, Chrome, Chromecast, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Now, Waze, and YouTube. Additional features that users can discover have also been added to Inbox by Gmail, Google Translate, and Google Search.
