Jaguar is back on the prowl when it comes to racing.

On Tuesday, the automaker announced its entry into the Federation International Automobile's Formula E circuit. Jaguar will enter the third season of the FIA Formula E Championship, beginning with the fall 2016 season.

Jaguar Land Rover looks at its involvement in Formula E racing as an opportunity to further develop its future electric powertrain, including engine and battery technology. It's a perfect pair, considering the FIA Formula E Championship is the world's first global single-seater racing championship for electric-powered cars.

"I am proud to announce Jaguar's return to racing with an entry into the innovative FIA Formula E championship," Jaguar Land Rover's group engineering director Nick Rogers said in a press release statement. "Electric vehicles will absolutely play a role in Jaguar Land Rover's future product portfolio and Formula E will give us a unique opportunity to further our development of electrification technologies. The Championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions."

Rogers believes that Formula E's pioneering approach with racing goes hand-in-hand with the direction that the automaker is going. 

Formula E is thrilled by Jaguar's entry into the Formula E circuit and the automaker's overall presence in its space.

Jaguar is a brand with a rich sporting heritage and the fact that it is returning to global motorsport with Formula E is a huge endorsement of the championship and its ability to influence the development of electric cars," Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said in a press release statement. "Jaguar brings with it a passionate fan base that will drive the popularity of the championship across the world and once again shows that Formula E is the future of motorsport."
