Nintendo's Mario creation tool Super Mario Maker has been taken offline until Jan. 28. The company says the game is undergoing emergency maintenance due to an unspecified bug.

The game is expected to be back up and running by 8 p.m. EST, but the question still remains as to what kind of game-breaking bug has caused Nintendo to take the entire game offline for a full day. The game's online functionality revolves around users creating and uploading their custom-made Mario levels to the Web for others to play. Players can play the levels of others, including Nintendo, by heading online as well.

Without online functionality, it sounds like players will only be able to make levels, not upload or play the creations of others. Though this sort of maintenance isn't common for Nintendo, it has happened in the past with other games, like the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne. That game's online services were taken offline late last year after players discovered a glitch that allowed them to access the game's paid "The Old Hunters" DLC expansion for free. The glitch was then fixed and the game was brought back online.

Super Mario Maker doesn't have any DLC or microtransactions, so we can only assume the bug Nintendo is currently addressing is game-breaking in some way, otherwise, the fix could simply wait until the game's next update.

If you can't wait to jump online and get your Super Mario Maker fix, you can always check out some of our favorite creations in the game so far.
